How to choose the right products for my skin type?

Choosing the correct products can be tricky and confusing as there are so many brands out there making some wonderful sounding promises. But how do we really know what will deliver the best result for our skin type? How to choose the correct products for my skin type?

To answer these questions, it is important to understand the two main types of skin care products that are out there on the market: ‘cosmetic products’ and ‘cosmeceutical’ products’, and what each has to offer the consumer.

What is the difference between cosmetic products and cosmeceutical products?

Cosmetic Products:

More familiar to the consumer and making up the bulk of the skincare market are what we call ‘cosmetic’ skin care products. These will include department store brands and professional brands such as Clarins, Clinique, Elemis, ESPA and many more. Brands such as these might contain many unique formulas and ingredients and are very aesthetically pleasing. The packaging is elegant, the textures and fragrances are indulgent and luxurious making them a pleasure to use and apply to your skin. But what about results? Well, ‘cosmetic’ skin care is only designed to treat the more superficial layers of the skin made up of compacted dead skin cells, this means that while they feel wonderful and give some instantaneous effects, the improvements will be temporary, and these products will not treat skin conditions such as for example hyper-pigmentation, deep wrinkles or severe acne. If you are genuinely happy with the overall condition of your skin and are looking for products as maintenance and for the sensorial experience of using luxury skincare, these types of products will give you what you are looking for.

Cosmeceutical Products:

For the treatment of skin conditions with fast, dramatic results and long- term skin health, I’d advise the use of a more advanced type of product known as a ‘cosmeceutical’ skin care. Cosmeceuticals use a much higher concentration of powerful active ingredients and are formulated very differently to cosmetic brands. Their molecular structures and clever delivery systems are designed to penetrate past the surface layers of our skin and travel all the way down to the living, regenerative components. Here they correct the way a damaged skin functions to restore it to health, improve skin conditions such as acne, sensitivity, hyper- pigmentation and reverse premature ageing damage. There are treatments that can work perfectly along- side these amazing aesthetic treatments such as micro- needling, meso-therapy, chemical peels and laser resurfacing.

Cosmeceuticals are most suitable for those willing to commit to a daily routine with their homecare, looking to achieve some serious improvements to their skin that can be maintained in the long term. Traditionally this type of product is somewhat less luxurious that cosmetic brands, packaging is usually quite plain, they are often fragrance free too so don’t expect to be blown away by how they smell. However, they deliver what they promise in terms of results, believe me, I suffered badly from acne as a youngster until discovering cosmeceuticals, and I can’t recommend them enough.

Going back to our original questions, so how to choose the correct products for my skin type? If you are looking for an attractive packaging, and nice texture and fragrance products that will deliver more superficial skin results go for cosmetics products, but if you are looking to achieve a long- term skin wellness, glowing and healthy complexion as well as improve skin conditions, go definitely for cosmeceuticals!
